BORDER MONITORING ALONG THE
INDO-NEPAL BORDER

Why it is Effective

The border between Nepal and India might as well be non-existent.   Thousands of people
cross back and forth between the two countries every day as casually as you walk from store
to store in a mall. The informality of crossing the border from Nepal into India is an opportunity
not lost on traffickers.  They count on the sheer numbers of people crossing to cloak their true
intentions of selling the girls they have kidnapped, bought or lured with promises of a job.
Traffickers have not, however, taken into account the expertise of those working for The
Peace Rehabilitation Center (PRC) and their ability to spot them, detain them, have them
arrested and rescue the girls.
PRC opened their first border patrol station in 2004 for the purpose of identifying trafficking
victims being forced or lured across the border.  These modest stations have proved to be a
huge success preventing hundreds of girls each year from being trafficked and sold into a life
of sexual slavery and labor servitude.

Why it is Necessary

It is estimated that 12,000 girls are trafficked from Nepal into India each year. That
means 1,000 girls are taken across borders each month.

The largest number of those trafficked in Nepal are transported across the border into India.
Free for Life International is excited to announce our partnership in a border monitoring
station on one of the heaviest traveled points starting in July 2010. We will be will be
partnering with PRC to continue this incredible border station.  This border station program
focuses on individuals crossing back and forth across the Nepal/India border. Monitoring
pedestrians and specifically looking for activity that may seem suspicious and then
interviewing those involved to make sure a girl is not in danger.
Nepal is the forth poorest country in the world and families and girls with little opportunity are
approached by traffickers who tell a tale of a better life.  A life where they may be able to send
money back to their family to help the entire family move beyond the poverty so many are
trapped in. The story they have been told is a lie and what awaits them instead is a life of
sexual slavery.  A life that begins with traffickers beating, starving and raping girls until they
are compliant and their spirits are broken. They are then forced to be with multiple men a day
and if they refuse the consequences are swift and severe.
This border station is set up at one of the most heavily traveled crossings into India.
Thousands travel this rout each week. This station alone is expected to prevent and rescue
100 to 200 girls each year from every having to be sold into a life of sexual slavery.  The
border staff will interview 2000 -3000 individuals crossing each month. Out of those 5% to
10% will be trafficking victims. Free for Life International has made a financial commitment to
maintain this station for the next 3 years.  Reports state that 1,000 girls are trafficked from
Nepal into India each month. This station is an opportunity to help change that number. We
cannot do any of this without your help. Through your donations you will ensure this station
will remain open. Be a part of this innovative first line of defense against trafficking in Nepal.

The Station

As this station is located hours away from the main PRC shelter in Kathmandu it must be
set up as a fully functional temporary shelter for those that are rescued.  It is not possible for
the staff to travel back to Kathmandu immediately with each girl. It may also may not be
necessary as the staff will begin by trying to reunite a girl with her family. This may take some
time as they work to not only educate her family about trafficking but prepare the entire village
for her return.  This is imperative as a girl can be stigmatized even if she was rescued before
she was sold into slavery.  If the family is unwilling to allow accept her back into the family she
will be welcomed with open hearts and arms into the PRC family.

So, the total amount it costs to keep a Border Monitoring Station, along with its Transitional
Home, running for one month is $1,614.30.  So consider this, if 300 girls are rescued through
this program in a year that means for approximately $82.50 you can prevent or rescue an
individual from a life of slavery.
