March 2007

Since its foundation 1994, Peace Rehabilitation Center (PRC) has been endeavoring to help the “girls
and women at risk’ including children belong to those girls and women. The main focus of the PRC is to
those girls and women who are highly at risk of trafficking for flesh tread industries and high potentiality
of spreading HIV-aids from those who have already been directly or indirectly involved in these
industries. From the beginning, it is reaching with multi-faced approach to protect and prevent the
victims in Nepal. However, the efforts might be a drop in an ocean, by the grace of our God and your
unflagging supports of both financial and prayers the PRC is doing its best for the betterment of those
victims so far as we believe our time and energy belong to those segments.

PRC is pleased to place this newsletter to our prayer partners and supporters for on-going regular
programs and some of the new approaches to the displaced/victims by the conflict. In order to running
the programs PRC is encountered with some of new problems to be solved along with the regular
program for which we need your prayer supports. Let all the activities highlighted briefly in this
newsletter as follows:

Skill development and income generation program:  PRC has  designed and running several
programs in different parts of the country and encompassed to those girls and women living at highly
risk areas to make them employable, and provide them with an opportunity to start their own small
enterprises to empower such segments financially. The PRC provides start-up funds, training, and on
going assistance in cooperation of the local churches for the project such as:

Candle making program: This program is launched in Kawasoti, Nawalparasi district where more
than 20 women are engaged to make the candles. PRC has formed a committee from the local churches,
buy the candle making machine and provide raw materials to the committee. First, the committee selects
women trainees from the marginalized communities who are potential at risk of being easily misused and
organizes trainings to those selected trainees and employed them for candle making project. The income
from the program supposed to be multiplied the program in the community.

Pig/goat/cow keeping: Under this program PRC has provided total 50 goats to financially empower
the women and girls at risk areas. Currently the program is running in Chitawan and Nawlparasi districts.
At first the PRC forms a group of beneficiaries and provides a goat to a woman. She has to share firs-
born baby-goat to her neighbor to whom the group has recommended and the first goat remains to her
benefit. Likewise the program multiplies and strengthens the women financially. Similar way, the PRC
longed to provide cows, pigs, and buffalos to widen its program to the needy girls and women in
different parts of the country.

Sewing and knitting: This program is running in Nawalparasi district to train the women and girls
and establish them in their own community with trained manpower. PRC provides trainers and sewing
machines to the trainees to empower financially and self-sustained in the community.

Spices production: PRC is running another income generation spices production program
encompassed the needy women and girls in Butwal. It is providing machine and raw materials to the
needy local church women and girls for their income generation.

Driving classes:  This training is focused to those girls from backward communities. Recently five
girls from Chitawan district have completed their driving classes. PRC is launching a second phage of
the training in Chitawan soon. It is providing training fees for the trainers up to three months, until they
became completely trained in the subject. It is hoped the girls who are getting training may able to get
driving jobs easily.

Non-Formal Education (NFE) Classes: There are several NFE classes running in those areas
where skill development and income generation program are running to educate and aware the girls and
women at high risk areas on reproductive health, HIV/AIDS and STDs, nutrition, and children. Recently,
there are two classes running in Butawal where 40 women and girls are taking part of the program.

Rehabilitation center: PRC is providing shelters for the retunes from their flesh-tread business and
provides home-base care, regular health care services, counseling, and skill oriented programs for the
rest, recovery and reintegration of the victims to make ready mentally and vocationally adjust in their
own community. We offer both short-term and long-term care in safe and loving Christian family
environment in the shelters. In Kathmandu shelter, there are 24 returnees girls getting shelter. The
number will never be fixed and

Child care program: Many times, we have been encountered with the children come along with their
victim parents to whom we cannot ignore. Since its foundation PRC is looking after the children in the
same shelter where those HIV positive patients and retunes are living. We are strongly feeling to have a
separate home for the children where neediest children can live.

Border Monitoring Program: PRC is running one boarder surveillance booth in southern parts of
the country in the partnership of SERVE-Nepal. Currently, PRC has a booth in Mahendranagar placed in
western south boarder of Nepal and India. India for the women traffickers is the fertile land and easy
access due to free entrance, where hundreds of young women and girls haven trafficked every years. To
prevent and protect the women and girls from being trafficked PRC has its own booths and staff to check
secretly and strictly in those places, however, we long to establish such booths in all the major boarder
cities of the country from west to east in south.

A Message from the Founder and Director of PRC:

Let me extend our best wishes for this Easter that will be filled all of us with a hope and joy in Jesus
Christ. Beside of uncertainties, danger, and fear due to the political liquidity, PRC has not loose its
mission to protect, prevent, and provide the girls and women at risk through various welfare activities
from its foundation to date. It can only be possible because of your commitments and regular supports of
both prayers and finance. Twelve years long political insurgency left thousands of people abandoned
and orphan with bereaved of their parents, displaced and homeless poor. However, the stat is moving
ahead towards the peace process; still the cloud of fear and danger could not be removed from the
heart of Nepali people. The saddest part of the insurgency is that the women and girls are most
victimized by the insurgency and left them at great risk of being abused and misused.

Though, from the beginning PRC is running for the betterment of the women and girls at risk, it is feeling
to extend its mission towards the conflict victim women and girls who are at potential risk of abuse
misleads by the traffickers and brokers with new and effective programs among those insurgency
victims for which PRC exists.

Finally, I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all of you for your unflagging commitments to
support PRC financially and prayerfully. I hope and urge to join your both prayers and financial
supportive hands to hold with us to serve those vulnerable of the society in Nepal.

Thank you

Shanta Sapkota
